“Major soul” and “minor soul” are analogies. Major in this context means majority. Generally in Britain when this phraseology evolved in the English language, it was established by observation that the average person lived for 40 years. Thus one who was 21 years or older was a major and those who had not yet attained 21 years of age were minors. In contemporary English the word “minor” is still used for an “underage person” but the word “major” is no longer used and is considered archaic. Generally a minor must have some sort of guardian, either his/her parents or even adoptive parents and the minor is forbidden to enter into legal binding contracts that is something directly coming from English Common Law which is the basis of both modern American, British, Australian, Canadian and even Indian law. So this is where the concept of the guru as a guardian is derived. So the prospective disciple will understand that he is a spiritual “minor” and that his guru and guru varga are those who are spiritually “majors” or spiritually mature. Therefore the prospective disciple will realize the ultimate need of a divine guardian in his his endeavor as a sincere seeker. Of course Srila Sridhar Maharaj would say that he never saw himself as a “finished professor but always as a student.” This indicates that in relation to the divine guardian, the disciple will always in the minor position, even if he himself later has disciples.

Forgive me but I forgot to mention that Srila Sridhar Maharaj had a law degree from Scottish Church College in Kolkata. He graduated one year before Srila B.V. Swami Prabhupada would have. Srila Prabhupada finished his matriculation at Scottish Church College but as a member of Gandhi’s Non-violent Independence Movement he declined to accept the degree as a formal protest against British Colonial Rule. Srila Sridhar Maharaj was also a member of Gandhi’s Movement but the year that he graduated that type of protest was not yet taking place.
